Moving to Canada for University? Your Winter Gear Shouldn't Fly Business Class

Delhi–Toronto flights charge per extra bag, and a Canadian winter demands more luggage than any other destination — jackets, thermals, blankets and boots that eat your allowance before the books go in. Students ship the heavy half by courier, and with a goods-to-follow declaration at landing, used belongings arriving later normally clear customs duty-free.

Goods-to-follow — say it at the border, save the duty

The CBSA trick most students miss: when you land in Canada, tell the border officer you have goods to follow and list your incoming boxes (CBSA form BSF186/BSF186A). Belongings you owned and used before moving — clothes, books, bedding, kitchenware — then normally clear duty-free when the courier arrives weeks later. Skip the declaration and the same box can be assessed like a fresh import. Make the list before you fly; we give you the box inventory to attach.

What students actually ship to Canada

University cities we deliver to

Door delivery covers Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, Waterloo, Winnipeg and Halifax at standard rates. Remote campuses (northern Ontario, interior BC, Atlantic islands) can carry a carrier remote-area surcharge — send us the postal code and we check it against the carriers' remote lists before you book, free.

Pre-departure checklist

Student shipping to Canada — FAQs

Will CBSA charge duty when my boxes arrive weeks after me?

Normally no — declare goods-to-follow at first landing with a list (BSF186), and used personal effects clear duty-free when they arrive. Without the declaration, CBSA can treat the box as a normal import and assess duty/taxes on it.

Can I ship pickles and dry food with my baggage to Canada?

Yes within CFIA limits — Canada is the rare lane where even sealed retail pickle jars are accepted. Keep food a small, labeled part of the box (the food surcharge applies to food shipments) and bubble-wrap jars against winter freezing in transit.

Should my boxes arrive before or after I land in Canada?

After — the goods-to-follow declaration must happen at your first entry, and someone must receive the parcel. Time the pickup so delivery lands a few days after your check-in; residence front desks in most Canadian universities accept student parcels.

Economy or express for student baggage to Canada?

Economy (₹843/kg, 4-9 Working Days) for boxes sent 2–3 weeks ahead; express (₹899/kg, 2-3 Working Days) when orientation is next week. The winter box can go economy in August; the September panic box goes express.
